In Crimson Desert, you don't fight alone. As Kliff, the leader of the Greymane mercenary band, rebuilding your scattered squad across the continent of Pywel is a central pillar of the game. The companion system intertwines real-time combat mechanics, base management, and passive resource generation, creating a dynamic gameplay loop that rewards careful squad composition and investment.

Active Combat Support & Synergies

While Kliff serves as the primary protagonist, the Greymane mercenaries are far more than passive background characters. Players can actively summon their recruited companions into real-time skirmishes using quick D-pad inputs. This allows for immediate squad support without disrupting the flow of the single-player combat experience.

When summoned, companions fight dynamically alongside Kliff. Positioning and timing are critical, as companions can execute cooperative finisher animations to quickly dispatch staggered enemies. Upgrading a companion’s gear directly increases the squad's total combat DPS.

Some major companions are fully fleshed-out and even playable during specific segments of the game. Standouts include Damiane, who utilizes a nimble combination of rapier, pistol, and shield, and Oongka, a towering orc berserker wielding a greataxe and warhammer.

Here, players must manage camp morale and construct new facilities. A dedicated Bond system tracks your relationship level with individual comrades. By completing specialized quests and interacting with your crew, you improve these bonds, which in turn unlocks unique traits and combat advantages for your squad.

The camp is not strictly limited to hardened fighters; players can also recruit or adopt non-combat pets to add life to the settlement.

Running Dispatch Missions

You won't be able to bring every recruited mercenary into battle at once. To ensure your inactive roster is always contributing, Crimson Desert features a robust Dispatch Missions system.

Through the Greymane Camp's Dispatch Board, players can send mercenaries on timed expeditions. These missions range from gathering rare crafting materials to executing fortress sieges and controlling contested territory.

The success rate and loot quality of these expeditions are not random. They scale directly based on the specific skills of the assigned mercenaries and the overall Blessing Level of the camp, making careful roster management highly lucrative.
